LIV Golf Mayakoba: Day Two
Niemann holds, Burmester rises: Saturday was a windy day in Mayakoba. How much did the wind impact? Not one player had a bogey-free round. Joaquin Niemann still holds the lead after day two with a round of 1-under-par. Dean Burmester of Stinger GC was Saturday’s big riser. The South African gained five strokes to put himself in a tie for second. All of this despite bogeying two holes but made up for it with seven birdies.
Legion XIII Shines: Jon Rahm was impressive after day one, shooting -5 and in a tie for fourth at -9 overall. Kicking it up a notch on Saturday, Rahm shot -4 and ended the day in a tie for second with Dean Burmester. Legion XIII find themselves in second place in the team competition in big part to Caleb Surratt. Surratt shot -1 today and is in a tie for 19th. Tyrrell Hatton finishes the day at even, gaining a stroke from yesterday as well. Tomorrow all scores count toward the team competition. Torque GC is still in first at -15 while Smash GC rounds out the podium in third.
The Rest of the Top-10: Sergio Garcia gained a stroke today but fell back a spot to fourth. The 44-year-old has looked impressive this weekend and even had an eagle on the fifth hole. Charles Howell III, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Reed are in a tie for fifth at -5. Howell III shot -2 today, still in contention to repeat at Mayakoba. Kopeka enters the top 10 after being just outside yesterday in 12th, shooting -3. Reed had a tough day but is a strong final-round player. In a tie for 8th to round out the top 10 is a trio of Dustin Johnson, Sebastian Munoz, and Bubba Watson. Johnson shot even today while Munoz gained a stroke. Watson was the biggest rise of the three, shooting -2 with an eagle on the fifth.
Correction: Yesterday I said Jinichrio Kozuma was making his LIV debut. Come to find out from either Arlo, Jerry, or David, that Kozuma played three events in 2022.
